Economic migration to Britain

A British politician has called for an end to economic migration:

A Labour MP has said economic migration to Britain should be stopped, saying "enough is enough".

Roger Godsiff said economic migration was unnecessary and it posed a danger to race relations within the UK.

The Birmingham Sparkbrook and Small Heath member's opinion puts him at odds with his own party leaders and the Conservatives' quota plans.

The Home Office follows a policy of "managed migration" bringing in workers to fill gaps.

Conservative leader Michael Howard has called for an Australian-style points system to ensure migrants have skills needed by in the UK jobs market.

Mr Godsiff told BBC Radio 4's Westminster Hour: "I do not believe that economic migration is any longer necessary and I also don't think it is going to be good for the future of race relations in this country.

"I have to view it as a Member of Parliament representing a constituency which has already taken in a large number of first and second generation immigrants, who have assimilated and who have contributed a great deal to the development of the country. But enough is enough."
