Mixed race in America

Cheryl Wetzstein:

More than 7 million Americans -- nearly 3 percent of the U.S. population -- have parents of more than one race, the Census Bureau says in its first full portrait of the nation's multiracial population.

The two most common combinations are white with "some other race" (2.3 million people) and white with "American Native and Alaska Native" (1.2 million people), said the report, which is based on first-of-its-kind data collected in the 2000 census.

Here are the demographics:

Data show that the mixed-race population is youthful -- more than 40 percent are 18 or younger.

Mixed-race persons 15 and older are less likely to be married compared with the overall U.S. population -- 27 percent versus 37 percent, respectively. They are also more likely to be foreign-born than the U.S. population -- 24 percent versus 11 percent, respectively.

The mixed-race population is less likely to finish high school, but more likely to go to college, than the general population. They are also more likely to be in service, sales, construction, production or transportation jobs.

The median family income of a mixed-race couple is $39,432, compared with $50,046 of all U.S. families. Mixed-race children are also more likely to live in poverty than the overall child population -- nearly 20 percent, compared with nearly 17 percent, respectively.

Overall, it would seem that single-race individuals are better off than mixed-race ones.

The negative facts about mixed-race couples and their offspring need to be widely publicized, particularly among young whites.

This is anecdotal, and I have never seen any kind of study on it, but at the same time it may not be too difficult to find data, but a nurse acquaintance who worked in a neo-natal ICU once told me it was her distinct impression that White/Asian mixed race babies were more likely to have complications.

However:

[...but more likely to go to college, than the general population.]

I would guess the White/Asian mix kids are the biggest factor here.

Just as:

[The mixed-race population is less likely to finish high school,...]

The White/Black and White/Hispanic offspring etc are the biggest problem here.

Just guessing, though.

Most Mexican immigrants are mestizos (means 'half-breed' in Spanish), blacks are 20 to 25 % European in bloody.

How are these people not mixed race?

Notice almost all race-mixing world-wide is white with nonwhite. With white birthrates as they are (below replacement levels), why would anyone promote this?

I think this article is stupid.

I'm in a long term relationship with an asian woman (as you can tell I'm caucasian) and we're both in college. The fact that with both our upcoming degrees we would pull in over $150+ thousand dollars combined with our STARTING salaries is more than enough.

To go out an say all mixed racies are bad is completly biased. This is just another view from a supposed "Hardcore" American. We have so many problems in our country it was only a matter of time before they started pointing the finger at mixed races.

The whole truth of the matter is the whites have a control on the country. Racism is still strong and this is just one of those negative views. Take my advice. Take a Sociology class. You'll find out ALOT more information that what the statistics say.
