White teen killed In baseball bat attack by black "friend"

Chris Ayres:

A 13-YEAR-OLD baseball player bludgeoned a fellow teenager to death with a wooden bat after his team lost for the first time this season, officials in California said yesterday.

According to witnesses, the teenager pulled the baseball bat from his bag and hit the victim in the knees, then the head, after being teased about his team’s loss at a concessions stand. The boy, whose name has not be released, was arrested as part of a murder investigation and was being held at the Antelope Valley Juvenile Hall, near Palmdale, a desert town outside Los Angles.

He was taken into custody still wearing his red team baseball cap. Jeremy Rourke, 15, was pronounced dead at a hospital after the attack, which took place at 8.34pm on Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman for the coroner’s office.

Although the suspect was black and Jeremy was white, race was not thought to be a factor in the killing.

Of course, if it had been the case of a white kid killing a black one, no one would deny that racism was a factor in the murder.

Ever since the story broke I've been wondering about the ethnicity of the culprit. Naturally, every story I saw failed to mention it, which only increased my curiousity (not necessarily my suspicion, since it is a juvenile).

Unbelievable.

Also unbelievable are some of the mitigating remarks I've heard.
