Arab-American Army sergeant arrested as deserter

Detroit Free Press:

An Arab-American Army sergeant who didn't want to go back to the Middle East for a third time has been arrested at his parents' home as a deserter.

Karim Iraq, 25, left his post at Fort Stewart, Ga., six months ago and headed home to Palm Beach County. He complained of being taunted by his comrades and disillusioned about the Iraq war.

Iraq was tracked down after a notebook with anti-American and anti-Semitic writings was found Monday in his backpack at a gas station. The backpack apparently was discarded by a burglar who broke into the family home in recent days.

The Detroit-born soldier of Palestinian descent was arrested Tuesday and is being held without bail at the Palm Beach County Jail.
