British police seek help in finding rapist

Ben Ashford:

A TERRIFIED woman was dragged into a dimly-lit street and raped.

The sex beast cornered his victim in Walworth Road in the early hours of Saturday.

He bundled the 43-year-old into a side street and subjected her to a vile attack.

The rape happened just after 2am in Browning Street, police said.

The woman - whose identity has being withheld to protect her identity - is said to be deeply distressed but has bravely helped cops draw up a description of the attacker.

Specialist officers from Southwark's Sapphire Unit are supporting her through the ordeal.

They urgently want to hear from witnesses.

Detective Inspector Kerry Pauling described the attack as a serious sexual assault.

She told the South London Press: "The victim is deeply distressed and we are doing everything we can to support her.

"We would urge any witnesses to come forward immediately.

"We are keen to speak from anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious."

Officers patrolling Walworth Road and the surrounding areas have been briefed about the attack and issued with descriptions of the suspect.

He was black, in his late 20s, with a beard.

He spoke with a strong African accent.

If you have any information, contact Detective Constable Natalie Palmer, of the Southwark Sapphire Unit, on 020 7232 6182.

Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
