Increased security will be in force at Jefferson High School - the scene of three major racial brawls in the past six weeks

ABC News:

The most recent fighting broke out Thursday and involved about 100 students, according to school district officials. Two 15 year-old girls were hospitalized for hyperventilation, they said.

The unrest came about six weeks after a pair of racially motivated fights broke out on the South Los Angeles campus involving hundreds of students.

"There will be five Los Angeles Unified School District police officers assigned to Jefferson for the balance of the school year, and furthermore for the beginning of the next school year," Dan Isaacs of the Los Angeles Unified School District said Friday.

Attendance was down sharply Friday, with 900 students absent and 1,440 present, district spokeswoman Hilda Ramirez said. About 250 to 300 students are absent on a typical day, Ramirez said.

A "Days of Dialogue" session, which was scheduled before Thursday's violence, was held at the school Friday. Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa met with teachers and students in hopes of easing racial tensions.

Human relations teams from the U.S. Justice Department were on the campus along with officials from the city and county human relations commissions, Villaraigosa said.

Elsewhere, a fight between a black and a Latino student at Los Angeles High School escalated into "a brawl of some kind" on Thursday afternoon, the district's Susan Cox said.

The school was briefly locked down and two students were detained, Cox said. No serious injuries were reported, Cox said.

"Bridging cultural differences"

That's a good one.

Actually, the 'cultures' involved seem to have at least one thing in common already: they like to brawl.
