The English Harem

RTE News:

Actress Martine McCutcheon has landed a role in the new television drama 'The English Harem'.

She is set to play the part of a supermarket checkout girl who falls in love with a Muslim restaurant owner and agrees to marry him, despite the fact that he already has two wives.

Her character will have to try to overcome opposition from her parents and her racist ex-boyfriend.

'The English Harem', which will also star 'Holby City' actor Art Malik, is based on a novel by Anthony McCarten.

Malik said: "The difference in background and age between the two central characters makes it original and enticing."

Nick Elliot, ITV drama controller, said: "The English Harem is a charming and highly original film. It is timely in that it explores the Muslim community."

"explores the Muslim community"

In all its charming aspects.

"racist ex-boyfriend"

What a surprise. Such a person does not exactly seem central to the plot, as it doesn't seem one has to be a "racist" to see one's ex-girlfriend ('She prefers him to me?!) marrying a polygamous Muslim as something to get a little pissed off at.

Joe Jackson's 'Is She Really Going Out With Him' comes to mind:

"Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street
From my window I’m staring while my coffee grows cold
Look over there! (where? )
There’s a lady that I used to know
She’s married now, or engaged, or something, so I am told

Is she really going out with him?
...
Here comes jeanie with her new boyfriend
They say that looks don’t count for much
If so, there goes your proof"

And so it goes.
