Italy expels 'Islamic extremist'

A Tunisian national has been deported from Italy under new anti-terror laws - the second North African to be expelled from the country in a week.

Ben Said Faycal was a suspected member of "Islamic terrorist cells" operating in northern Italy, the interior ministry said.

He was arrested in the town of Varese and then put on a Tunisia-bound plane on Wednesday, the ministry said.

The tough anti-terror laws were adopted in July, after the London bomb attacks.

On Tuesday, Italy expelled Moroccan-born imam Bourki Bouchta, saying he represented a danger to public security.

The imam denies the claims.

The past few days also saw the deportation of Algerian national Kamel Bouraib, suspected of having links to Algeria's Armed Islamic Group (GIA).

He was expelled after Italian officials said he did not meet the necessary criteria for his residence permit to be renewed.
