A mother was charged with concocting a story of the kidnapping of her disabled seven-year-old son
WABC-TV:
Police say 40-year-old Karen Wright made up the story of the abducted child as she attempted to hold up the Commerce Bank at 372 Jericho Turnpike yesterday afternoon.
Wright entered the bank at around 1 p.m. with a note she planned to give the teller announcing the robbery.
Eyewitness News learned once Wright got into the bank, she got scared and asked the teller to call the police. She told police that two men had stolen her car at gunpoint and driven away with her son, who has cerebral palsy and is unable to walk.
Police issued an amber alert for the boy and the supposed getaway vehicle, a 1999 Lexus the woman claimed to have been driving. The search was called off when the boy, Jordan Powell, was found safe at his St. Albans, Queens, home.
After extensive questioning, police say, Wright recanted the abduction story. She admitted her son was safe at home the entire time.
Wright was charged with falsely reporting an incident and possession of stolen property. She will be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead later today.
