Police in Moscow have detained a student from the Dominican Republic over the killing of a citizen from the ex-Soviet republic of Uzbekistan
BBC News:
The victim, 22, died of stab wounds near Friendship of the Peoples University where the suspect is a student, Moscow prosecutors say.
The Uzbek had reportedly been drinking when a row broke out with the suspect.
Russia still educates students from the developing world at its universities in a practise going back to Soviet times.
Prosecutors say the unnamed victim was an illegal resident working at a car park near the university campus.
He had been drinking with an acquaintance when an argument involving the suspect began, and degenerated into a fight.
One Russian news agency, Interfax, reports that police are seeking a number of other university students in connection with the same death.
Friendship of the Peoples was known in Soviet days as Patrice Lumumba University in honour of the Democratic Republic of Congo politician, and trained foreign engineers and doctors.
The Uzbek's death comes after an increase in attacks on foreigners, including students, in Russia which have usually been linked to local residents and have raised fears of growing racism and xenophobia.
