Somali gang terror in Britain
Bexley Times:
TRADERS and residents have spoken out about a feared gang they say is terrorising their area.
The 20-strong mob - known as the Woolwich Manz - are understood to have been operating in Woolwich for the last five years.
Two men wanted in connection with the murder of rookie PC Sharon Beshenivsky in Bradford are also believed to have links to the Somali gang.
Naresh Sandhir, a shopkeeper in Powis Street, Woolwich, said: "I know of this Somali gang.
"They have been round here a few times and we just do all we can to kick them out.
"It is fair to say there is quite a lot of gang trouble around here, especially in the evenings. And Woolwich train station seems to be their favourite place to hang around."
Last weekend police raided a flat in Plumstead, and one resident is in no doubt that officers were after members of the Woolwich Manz.
Mum-of-two Norma Fenlon told reporters: "The Somali gangs are well known around here.
"The Woolwich Manz is the most feared but there are others and lots of kids round here have been mugged by them.
"There are huge numbers of Somalis coming and going from the flat the police raided. They don't speak to anyone and you hardly know they are there. They are so quiet.
"But I have seen Somalis driving brand new cars back here. You have to wonder how they afford them when these are housing association flats.
"Recently I saw them taking tape off a number plate of a brand new car. They have been using the tape to change the letters and disguise the plate and had obviously been up to no good with the car.
"I saw one a few months ago ripping up a police release form in front of the flat."
The gang is believed to have links to a number of incidents in London, and police are checking links between the Bradford shooting and other armed robberies around Britain.
However, Woolwich police remained tight-lipped about the gang.
Dale Openshaw, The Woolwich Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant, said he was aware of a Somali gang operating in the Woolwich area but said residents had nothing to fear.
He told the Kentish Times: "As far as the Woolwich Manz gang is concerned, they are not a huge criminal, underground gang. They are just a group of people, a group of lads.
"It is made up of Somalis, but I can't say too much as there could be links to the inquiry in Bradford.
"It is the consensus that they do operate in and around the Woolwich Common area, but it is nothing for the people of Woolwich Common to worry about."
A Somali teenager appeared in court yesterday charged with killing PC Beshenivsky.
Yusuf Jama, 19, went before magistrates in Leeds accused of murder, robbery and firearms offences following his arrest in Birmingham last Saturday (26).
However, police still want to speak to his brother, Mustaf, 24, and friend Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, 25, who have links to the London area.
The pair were officially named on Tuesday (29) as Britain's most wanted men.
Four people arrested in Plumstead in connection with the murder last weekend have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. One woman, 18, was released without charge.
WPC Beshenivsky, 38, was shot dead and colleague Teresa Milburn, 37, wounded after being called to an armed raid at a travel agents in Bradford 13 days ago.
As they arrived, three men burst from the building. Sharon was shot in the chest. Teresa went to her aid and was blasted in the shoulder.

The comments made by the beautiful race of Somalies or Somalians - pick your favourite - do speak for themselves. They show that they are really bright intelligent individuals.
Now, why, if you are all so great and beautiful and intelligent, don´t you invest all your energy into creating a flourishing country back home? In antiquity, Somalia was an important centre for commerce with the rest of the ancient world - go and work hard and transform your home country into a flourising economy once again.
And loveleys - make no mistake about it - the UK is NOT the Fed. Republic of Somalia. It´s not about what you want, not at all.
The government that protects all you sweetpies now, may not always be there.
And if we the natives want you out one day because we have had enough of your lovely participation in society - we´ll find a way.
What is wrong with you guys? Look at yourself & what you have become; blaming each other for what has happened to humanity. /its got nothing to do with whose supposedly 'hard' or whatever what is that worth? i mean really ask yourself all it makes you is a renowned thug, in simple words. & this racism wtf? is it me because i swear i thought that died out ages ago..
guess people nowadays being middle aged still have not matured. TUT TUT
