Tougher to get Norwegian citizenship

Aftenposten:

Minister of Justice Knut Storberget wants tougher laws to ensure that Norwegian citizenship is not granted to immigrant who are wanted for crimes committed in their homelands.

The Directorate of Immigration (UDI) believes that it is currently too easy for such persons to become Norwegian citizens.

The issue was debated in the Storting, Norway's parliament, on Wednesday.

Progress Party justice policy spokesman Jan Arild Ellingsen referred to UDI statements that a major problem was posed by a lack of access to foreign criminal registers, and the resulting situation was that individuals who should be extradited for trial are instead granted Norwegian citizenship on false grounds.
