Hispanics fear more violence after triple shooting

News4Jax:

Residents of a Southside apartment complex are nervous -- some reluctant to come out of their apartments -- after three men were shot in the parking lot Saturday night. One of them died and another remained in critical condition two days later.

Police said the shooting about 9 p.m. at the Dupont Garden Apartments on Smithfield Road, just off St. Augustine Road, was motivated by robbery.

Jose Vega died at the scene. Two others were taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center -- a 30-year-old man remained in critical condition Monday morning, while a 36-year-old man was treated and released.

Police believe the shooting was part of a robbery attempt. Investigators said the gunman was a black man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall.

Many Hispanics live in the apartment complex, and all three victims of Saturday night's violence were Hispanic.

Residents told Channel 4's Jim Piggott and Carlos Bouvier that they are afraid, fearing they are targets of violence because of their race.
