Baltimore County Board of Education's compromise on holidays fails to satisfy Muslims

Louis Llovio:

The Baltimore County Board of Education thought they'd met Muslims halfway: Two Islamic holy days would be recognized on the school calendar, but they wouldn't be designated as school holidays.

But that decision upset the same Muslims it was intended to mollify.

At the Feb. 28 Board of Education meeting, an ad hoc school board committee recommended that the board recognize the Islamic holy days of Id al-Fitre and Id al-Adha, allow Muslim students to take excused absences if the holidays fall on school days and that schools refrain from scheduling exams on those dates.

While the Baltimore County Muslim Council president, Bash Pharoan, hailed the recommendations as a positive step, he said the board had "failed to do what is right, which is equal treatment of the citizens of the county regardless of their faith."

The council's stance is that Muslim children should receive the same treatment as Christian and Jewish, who, he said, have "their holidays" off from school.

Islamic holiday closings rejected

Since the holidays don't fall on the same day (or even month in some cases) every year, and it takes moon sightings to determine, it seems like it would be problematic anyway. There would be whining and complaining from Muslims if the school tried to set a certain day ahead of time. They would want the school to wait for the mufti to declare he has seen the moon or some crap like that.
