A Jamaican man wanted by Canadian immigration officials and facing deportation has been arrested and now faces additional drug charges

Hamilton Spectator:

Hamilton police assisted Ontario Provincial Police and RCMP officers in the execution of an immigration warrant for the 30-year-old last Thursday. The Hamilton officers laid the charges after discovering a large quantity of crack and marijuana in the Caroga Court home.

The man was nabbed by police as he tried to flee through a back exit after officers knocked down the front door.

A 34-year-old woman in the house was also arrested.

After returning with a search warrant, Hamilton police seized $46,000 worth of crack cocaine and around $1,000 worth of marijuana.

Both are facing drug possession and possession for the purpose of trafficking charges. The man is also charged with possessing proceeds of a crime.

RCMP spokesperson Michele Paradis could not comment on why immigration officials were seeking to deport the man.

She explained the mandate of the RCMP and immigration task force was to issue warrants for those "deemed deportable on the grounds of criminality."
