Hispanics have lower autism rates

Karen Schradin:

That means 5.5 out of every 1,000 school-age children are autistic. The study is one of many being done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The first results, released yesterday, rely on surveys from tens of thousands of families. It finds boys are nearly four times more likely than girls to be identified with the condition. It also says Hispanics have lower autism rates. The study does not look at why the number of cases are increasing. Some claim a preservative in vaccines is responsible for the growing number of autistic children. Characteristics of autism include difficulty expressing needs and problems with socialization.
