Panel of rabbis issues edict calling on police to refuse orders to secure Jerusalem gay pride parade

Efrat Weiss:

A panel of rabbis made a halachic ruling Wednesday demanding police refuse orders to protect the gay pride parade slated to take place in Jerusalem Friday.

The rabbis, who consider themselves a Sanhedrin (supreme religious judicial body) and convene occasionally to discuss current issues, conferred on Friday’s gay pride parade in Jerusalem and concluded: “Any police officer who reveres God’s law will refuse orders and will not participate in any way in protecting those committing abominations in Israel," the rabbis ruled, who consider themselves a Sanhedrin.

Under the slogan, “He who reveres the word of the lord – will refuse orders!” the rabbinate wrote: “On Friday a massive protest is scheduled to take place in the holy city of Jerusalem called the pride parade. Participants in the event have chosen a lifestyle that opposes the Torah.

"These people suffer from the knowledge that their deeds are beastly and therefore they need this march of abominations to relieve themselves of the personal shame and guilt that they live in.”

“Thus, any police officer aiding the protest in any way is committing many severe violations. He is strengthening offenders and violating (the command) ‘Before the blind, do not put a stumbling block’ (Leviticus 19:14)…

"A police officer who participates in protecting the abomination parade brings exile upon the people of Israel, as is written in the Torah: ‘You shall not copy the practices of the land of Egypt… and the land will not disgorge you.’”

The rabbis ruled that “police who leave their posts in dangerous zones to participate in safeguarding the abomination, violates the obligation ‘Thou shall not stand idly by the blood of thy fellow man.’”

According to the ruling, the tidying up after the rally will be a mass defilement of the Sabbath. “A police officer who participates in the demonstration with his own hands is leading to desecration of the Sabbath, of which it is said, ‘He who desecrates the Sabbath will fall under the death sentence.

"A policeman enabling the abomination parade in any way humiliates the great rabbis who called to protest abomination. And anyone who humiliates the wise, has no place in the world to come.”

The ruling concluded that “any police officer participating in securing the abomination rally is a criminal who offends Torah prohibitions and supports criminals; his transgression is great and he will be judged by the heavenly throne.”

The halachic ruling was signed by prominent Rabbis Yisrael Ariel, Hillel Weiss and Yehuda Idri.
