Germany: A Jewish leader has reiterated his opposition to a Holocaust Memorial in Berlin after it has increasingly become used as a public toilet
TJ Reporter:
Stephan Kramer, the General Secretary of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said he was not surprised by an official report revealing that increasing numbers of people had urinated by the public monument since it was unveiled in May 2005.
He told TJ that he was against the idea from the beginning, “Since it isn’t an authentic place, why should they pay respect to it?
“To me all those incidents show that the memorial does not fulfil its purpose and that it will never replace the authentic places. The problem will not be solved with more security guards and protection or mobile toilets. It is a question of education and basic values.”
The memorial, known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, cost 25.3m EUROS to build and is made up of 2,711 concrete slabs.
