Prosecutors say DNA evidence links an ex-convict to the rape and torture of a Columbia grad student

NY1:

Robert Williams

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office says Robert Williams' saliva contained DNA matching skin cells on a T-shirt worn during the 19-hour assault.

Williams was taken forcibly from his Rikers cell to court yesterday, where he was surrounded by eight officers in riot gear.

Prosecutors say Williams had previously tried to smuggle razor blades out of his cell.

The 30-year-old was arraigned on 71 charges, including attempted murder, rape, kidnapping and arson.

Police say he forced his way into the 23-year-old victim's Hamilton Heights apartment in April.

Williams pleaded not guilty and faces life in prison if convicted.
