German state to offer Islam class in every school
Associated Press:
The western German state of Hesse expects to offer instruction in Islamic religion for Muslim students in every school in the state, a state official said Friday.
At least one school in every district in the state will offer Islamic instruction in the new school year, and at some point classes will be spread to every school, Culture Minister Karin Wolff said. The teaching will be phased in and a specific time plan will become clearer in the future, she said.
Germany has roughly 3.5 million Muslims, mostly of Turkish origin, making them the country's largest single minority group.
Germany: Islam Instruction for Kids
We don't hear about this in Holland

Perhaps this instruction should make it clear to female muslim students that they shouldn't get too attached to the headdress -- Kopftuch in German. Because it is now forbidden to wear this in certain jobs, e.g. government jobs, like teacher or bureaucrat. There was some controversy about this not so long ago.
But this verbot is more or less the case in Turkey as well.
So it is strange: At the same time they claim to teach about Islam, they ban a basic form of Islamic religious practice and expression -- the Kopftuch -- in certain areas of public life.
The official reason given was 'separation of church and state' -- no overt religious symbols allowed. Which naturally was followed by calls to remove all Christian symbols from public buildings (e.g. schools) as well. But of course the real reason for the Kopftuchverbot was that it -- the wearing of the Kopftuch -- was a discomfiting sign to many of the increasing presence of Islam, and evidence of this large and alien population. I mean, Islamic women are especially an isolated group (mostly by choice, as they observe Islam and wear the Kopftuch willingly) -- no western man will approach a Kopftuch wearing woman and ask for a date, and when you see them on the streets of Europe your first thought is...They don't really belong here.
