Man in coma after homophobic beating in New York City

Doug Windsor:

A 32 year old Brooklyn man is in a coma and listed in critical condition after being attacked by three men who beat, kicked and stomped on him while yelling homophobic epithets.

The attack on Dwan Prince occurred outside his apartment building on E. 94th St. and Kings Highway.

As Prince lay in a pool of his own blood witnesses rushed to his aid, but even then his attackers continued to kick him.

Witnesses said the assailants were three black men who got out of a BMW and rushed Prince about midnight.

Police have listed the attack as a hate crime. Investigators say witnesses gave good descriptions of the trio and add they are confident of making an arrest. It is believed Price may have made a flirtatious comment to one of the men earlier in the day.

Prince, who is HIV-positive, worked as a porter in the building where he lived is regarded as a kind gentle man by people who know him.

Since the perps were black it was obviously not a "hate crime".

Expect years and years of hysterical Matthew Shephard-esque shenanigans, memorials, self-flagellations, etc.

What's that? Oh, the perps weren't white, you say? Forgotten by tomorrow morning!

Who knows what really happened. But...

I rarely read such a story where there's nothing that could be viewed as a provocation, i.e. it could be called a 'pure' hate crime. And it seems this one is perhaps no different; if so...

What unbelievable stupidity.

Not that any provocation such as this is an excuse for a savage beating.
