Trash hauler is indicted in Truro slaying

Ralph Ranalli:

Christopher M. McCowen

The trash hauler arrested two months ago after authorities said his DNA matched a sample taken from slain Truro writer Christa Worthington was indicted by a Barnstable County grand jury yesterday on charges of murder, aggravated rape, and armed burglary, Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said.

Christopher M. McCowen, 33, was arrested on similar charges on April 15, after authorities said his DNA matched that taken from the crime scene in 2002. He has been held without bail for the last two months.

Authorities have charged that McCowen, who made weekly visits to Worthington's Depot Road home to pick up her garbage before the slaying, broke into her house and then raped and killed her. McCowen has pleaded not guilty.
