Half the electorate would like to see Britain pull out of the European Union

Evening Standard:

The YouGov poll, which questioned 2,299 people from July 22 to 25, asked if there should be a referendum on the UK's continued membership of the EU.

Some 62% backed a referendum, with 25% saying it was unnecessary.

Asked how they would vote if the options were Britain remaining an EU member, or Britain leaving the European Union and replacing membership with a free trade agreement, 34% said they would back continued membership, with 50% saying they would support the leaving option.

UKIP MEP Nigel Farage said: "These results are better than we could ever have dreamed. It now shows that there is a clear majority which wants free trade with the EU rather than membership.

"It is clear that what is now needed is a referendum on our continued membership. How much longer can the Government drag the British people in a direction they have no wish to travel in?"

More bad news for the European Union.

The biggest problem with the EU is not the economic cooperation part, which IMO needs to be scaled back some in any case, but the encompassing political union epitomized by the EU Constitution. I think not so many people would have such a big problem with the EU if this aspect -- the political union -- would be scaled back.

Unfortunately, the main goal of the EU seems to be political union.
