The number of Danes against beginning membership negotiations with Turkey is on the decline

Copenhagen Post:

A majority of Danes are still against the EU beginning accession negotiations with Turkey. According to a new poll conducted by Catinét research for Ritzau, only 33.1 percent of votes said they supported beginning negotiations as scheduled on 3 October. The majority, 52.4 percent, were against, while 14.5 percent were undecided.

Though the 'nays' are still in the majority, their number is declining. A similar poll in July found that 30 percent were directly against negotiations, and that 33 percent wished to have the negotiations delayed indefinitely. Twenty-two percent said they agreed with EU leaders that negotiations should begin as scheduled.

The new poll found that supporters primarily aligned themselves with left-of-centre political parties Red-Green Alliance and the Socialist People's Party, as well as swing party the Social Liberals.

Social Liberal spokesman for EU issues Lone Dybkjær said she was not surprised that 64 percent of her party's supporters back Turkish negotiations.

'I can only express my satisfaction with the support that a majority of our voters give,' said Dybkjær. 'It is important for security reasons. So it should be up to Turkey to deliver. There is definitely no doubt that more will be demanded of Turkey. They'll likely be required to behave better than other lands that have acceded to the EU.'

Based on age, the poll found that support for negotiations was strongest among 18 to 39-year-olds, with 46.1 percent saying they were in favour of negotiations, while 40.1 percent were against.

It continues to amaze me how determined the European Left are to bring Turkey into the European Union. The fact that Muslims are opposed to womens' rights (such as not being killed by members of your own family because you have "dishonored" them) seems to be of no concern to the leftists.

They see such problems as solvable thru 'integration'. Again I think the reason is the stigma of 'racism' and 'xenophobia' pinned on anyone who opposes the browning and/or islamicization of Europe. Fear of these words is, apparently, enuf to drive some to completely abandon logic and common sense -- to deny what they see around them every day, or what they can read in published statistics, e.g. about crime, welfare dependency, academic achievement.
