One of the suspects of the assassination bombing that killed former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has tight connections with Denmark

Copenhagen Post:

One of the suspects of the murder of former Lebanese Premier Rafik Hariri has close ties with Denmark, national broadcaster DR reported on Monday.

Hariri is believed to have been the target of a powerful explosion in February, which killed 17 other people and injured 220. Lebanon's opposition accused Syria and the Syrian-backed Lebanese government of the assassination, contributing to Syrian forces leaving Lebanon on 30 April and prompting an international investigation of Syria's involvement in the bombing.

In a UN report about the assassination, one of the suspects, Lebanese citizen Ahmed Abdel-Al is described as a top member of religious movement Al-Ahbash, which is represented in Denmark and has previously run three Arabic private schools.

Shortly after the report was issued in October, Abdel-Al was charged with complicity in the assassination.

Many sources in Denmark have told DR that they have met Abdel-Al in Denmark, and that he last visited the country in August to meet with Al-Ahbash' Danish chapter, which calls itself the Islamic Centre for European Countries and operates in Copenhagen's Nørrebro district.

The three schools were closed after their connection to Al-Ahbash was revealed in 1998.

Many of DR's sources say Ahmed Abdel-Al is or was married to a Danish woman.

Danish police have refused to comment on the case.
