Anti-semitic remarks were made as Asian youths punched and kicked a Jewish man in London

Emma Midgley:

The attack took place last Wednesday (February 22) at 4.50pm. Three Asian males and a number of girls surrounded and attacked the 44-year-old man, said police.

One of the attackers was heard to make racially abusive remarks.

Canary Wharf Group security personnel attended and detained one suspect, who was handed over to the Metropolitan Police for further enquiries.

An 18-year-old youth was arrested for racially aggravated assault and bailed to return to court on March 8.

The victim suffered a bruised leg.

Four witnesses are believed to have seen the attack take place.

Rabbi Danny Rich, chief executive of Liberal Judaism in London, said: "I was saddened to hear the report of this incident.

"Jews and others need to be vigilant but must equally not over-react. "Britain remains a safe country for Jews but all citizens, Jews and non- Jews alike, need to take active responsibility for creating a tolerant and decent society."

The attack came nine days after Jewish business leaders from Canary Wharf planted a tree in Jubilee Park to mark the New Year of the Trees - Tu BiShvat.
