In sub-Saharan Africa, women and girls make up almost 57% of all people with HIV, however, among young people (ages 15-24 years) 76% are female

Glory Mavuso:

A survey carried out by the Academy For Development (AED) last year, reveals that young women are much likely to contract HIV than young men globally.

It further states that of the estimated 12 million youths who are living with HIV and AIDS, 62 percent are female.

“In sub-Saharan Africa, women and girls make up to almost 57 percent of all people living with HIV, however, among young people (ages 15-24 years) 76 percent are female. In southern Africa, recent population-based studies suggest that there are, on average, 36 young women living with HIV, for every 10 young men,” AED representative Kent stated.

He said while there was a clear biological difference between men and women that place women at a higher risk of HIV infection (e.g it is much easier for women to get a sexually transmitted infection from men than the reverse), it is not clear as to the socially constructed aspects gender that accounts for more women being infected.
