Calgary's booming economy may be the reason some members of a violent and notorious Hispanic street gang have taken up residence here.
The Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13, which originated amongst Salvadoreans living in Los Angeles, tends to migrate to places where there is an established Hispanic community or good job opportunities, said Al Valdez, former supervisor of the gang unit for the Orange County district attorney.
"If they are there, it could be for the jobs," said Valdez, who spent many years investigating the MS-13 in Orange County.
Valdez said communities with a variety of minimum-wage jobs or employment opportunities where strong language skills aren't essential can attract immigrant Hispanic workers -- and also attract members of the MS-13.
"They tend to stay in small groups and live where other Central Americans live," he said.
Det. Frank Flores of the Los Angeles Police Department's gang unit said the Hispanic community is usually targeted first with crime and the gang members often depend on kids who are having difficulty fitting into the new culture for recruitment.
"They offer them immediate friendship and family," he said.
As the Hispanic community grows, so does the MS-13, he added.
Sgt. Gavin Walker of the Calgary police gang unit said it's easy to see why the MS-13, like other gangs, are attracted to Calgary.
"It's a growing city with a strong economy," he said.
The MS-13 has been de-scribed by many experts as the most violent gang currently in North America and has wreaked havoc on the streets of Central American cities, as well as more than 24 American states.
They are known for their extremely violent nature, involvement in the drug world and connections to human trafficking rings.
Recently they've made their presence known in Vancouver and Toronto, and Calgary police have now gathered intelligence indicating that some members are living here as well.
About 15 members of MS-13 have so far been deported from Vancouver and in August, a member was deported from Calgary.
Walker said so far MS-13 members haven't been linked to any crimes in the city and there's been no signs of a turf war.
However, Flores said MS-13 has been known to take over existing street gangs once it is entrenched in a community.

To the guy who said "id you see their MS13 on their foreheads" You don't tattoo your head thats just a way to be reconized. dont listen to him, Not every MS-13 Member tattoos their head. Actually its less likely to see an MS-13 member with it on their face.

To the did you see their Tatoo on the forhead. You are definetly not Mara Salvatrucha, The tatoo's are a story book for them. They know rank, position and blah blah blah by these boys. I have been to Salvador with the military and been to their jails. They are policed outside no one but, MS13 in there. They say who comes and goes. Wont even mention the name 18th street (referred to as the other neighborhood). Look for tatoos inside the lip, Stars on the shoulders, these are more likely to see. Tattoo's are a badge have to be earned. Having said that this gang is not a joke. Military combat experience and growing up in a dishevelled country has provided that schooling for them. Extremely violent, Last thing anyone needs.

For starters, any member of MS13 will display their name no matter their situation. This is a organization that has alot of pride in who they are and what they do! I know this all to well as I have studdied MS13 for many years. And being a 20 year vetran of the streets of Winnipeg with full OG status, I know my facts. Their tatoo's do tell a story, alot like the Yakuza and their Izummi body suits. So, they kinda stand out. WITH PRIDE! I highly doubt that any member of MS13 would post as anonomous! But hey that's Winnipeg for you, everyone is a gangbanger lmao.
