A woman cheered her 18-year-old son and his fellow gang members while they gang-raped a woman to get back at the victim's boyfriend
John McDonald:
The 23-year-old victim was invited to a party in a room at Zaby's Motor Lodge, 444 Katella Ave., on the evening of Feb. 23, said Deputy Orange County District Attorney Susan Schroeder.
Once in the room, she was beaten by Jolean May Disbrow, 25, and told it was in retaliation for something her boyfriend had done against the gang, Schroeder said.
The beating was the start of seven hours of sexual attacks on the woman, according to authorities.
Those in the room during the gang rape included Connie Herrera Retana, 39, of Anaheim and her son Martin Carlos Delgado, police said.
"The gang mom, Retana, is cheering on her own son while he and his friends are doing these horrible, shocking things," Schroeder said.
Retana has served two prison terms for drugs, including one last year, she said.
Anaheim Police Chief John Welter said the victim was threatened with death if she went to police but she reported it several hours later after talking to friends.
Her car had been stolen by the gang, and it was recovered with four of the rape suspects the next day, authorities said.
Welter said retaliation involving a sexual attack is rare, and investigators are trying to determine whether it was the sole motive. He declined to comment on whether the victim or her boyfriend were with a gang.
At least 10 people have been arrested on charges connected to the rape, including Delgado, Retana, Disbrow and another woman.
Schroeder said the public was being asked to help find one suspect: Oscar Jose Barajas, 19, also known as "Sporty."
Police ask anyone with information about the case to call (714) 765-1900.
