A Kansas City man is expected to appear in Jackson County Circuit Court today to face a rape charge from 2004
Christine Vendel:
Police arrested Vincent A. Childs, 41, Monday on one count of forcible rape for the Nov. 26, 2004 incident. He remained in custody today.
DNA tests in January scientifically linked him to the crime. Prosecutors charged him last week.
A 24-year-old woman told police she was sitting at a bus stop at Linwood Boulevard and Prospect Avenue when a man pulled up in a vehicle and offered her a ride. She initially refused, but then agreed.
She said he drove her to a gas station, then to 43rd Street and Agnes Avenue, where he stopped the vehicle. He put his hand over the woman’s mouth and told her, “Do as I say and you won’t get hurt.”
He then rifled through her purse looking for a piece of identification. He said he wanted to know her identity “in case something happens to me, I’ll know where to find you.”
The man raped her in the vehicle and dropped her off at 39th Street and Indiana Avenue, where she called police.
Police arrested and questioned Childs after the incident, but released him, pending further investigation. He told police at the time that he had consensual sex with the woman, according to court records.
