The African wife of a 76-year-old British resident has appeared in court alongside three other men accused of murdering her husband in Gambia

Kate West, 26, pleaded guilty to the murder of William West, from Hastings in East Sussex, during a hearing at Brikama Magistrates' Court.

The three men denied the charge. All four suspects were remanded in custody until 17 August.

Mr West's charred remains were found in a bag outside his Gambian holiday home.

He disappeared at the beginning of July and Mrs West initially told police that five Nigerian men had taken him from their luxury property in Sanyang and killed him.

Assistant superintendent Aziz Bojang said she then changed her story and said she had knocked her husband unconscious and set fire to his body.

He said it appeared Mr West died from a blow to the head.

"Following his death, he was dragged to some location where his body was burnt as a means of disposing of his remains," he said.

The three suspects who pleaded not guilty to Mr West's murder were Favor Akponegbeta Abakau, Idriss Masad and David Bathran.

Officers from Sussex Police are due to travel to Gambia on Tuesday to assist with the local investigation.

They are expected to return to the UK on Friday with some of Mr West's DNA samples for forensic analysis.
