Wales: Failed Kurdish asylum seeker admits carrying out an assault with a long- bladed carving knife

This is South Wales:

A Failed asylum seeker has admitted carrying out a serious attack in Llanelli town centre with a long-bladed carving knife. Soram Hamza Ibrahim, who is in custody, pleaded guilty at Swansea Crown Court.

An interpreter translated proceedings into Kurdish when 27-year-old Ibrahim appeared before Judge John Diehl QC.

Creighton Harvey, prosecuting, said the defendant, arrested after a violent incident on January 18, was captured by CCTV cameras.

Ibrahim pleaded guilty to affray, unlawfully wounding Simon Quint, and having a long-bladed carving knife as an offensive weapon in Island Place.

Barrister Andrew Davies said it seemed his client had arrived in the UK after being deported from Holland.

Mr Harvey told Judge Diehl: "He has been refused asylum in this country.

"He asked for voluntary repatiation but the authorities weren't sure who he was and would not agree to this. My understanding is that he will eventually be deported."

Ibrahim, who is being held at Swansea Prison, will return to court to be sentenced at the end of this month.

Why on earth didn't the authorities deport this guy when he asked them to?
