England: A teenage Sikh girl is being guarded by police amid claims she had been forced to convert to Islam

An armed gang smashed their way into a house in Erdington last month and threatened the occupants, apparently in search of the girl.
She was reported missing from her family home in West Bromwich a few days earlier.
They are concerned that the girl, understood to be a student at Sutton Coldfield college, could have been forced to switch religion, it was reported.
"This lady has been located and is currently in the care of West Midlands Police," a force spokesman said.
"We would like to reassure the community that this lady is safe and well."
An investigation was launched on May 25 following the aggravated burglary in Erdington when masked men broke into the house and threatened the occupants with weapons, possibly believing the girl was staying there.
Police said no one was injured in the incident.
"We are conducting inquiries into the motive for this attack," the spokesman said.
"We are not ruling the possibility this may be linked to a report received concerning the whereabouts of an 18-year-old female from West Bromwich, who was reported missing by her family."
He added: "Her family are clearly concerned about her welfare as are the wider communities.."
A spokesman for Birmingham City Council said: "We are working closely with the police to deal with a number of sensitive issues being raised by members of the community and will be working together with other interested parties to consider the wider and longer term implications for the city."

What is a 'forced conversion' worth, in any case. If someone tied me down or knocked me out or drugged me and then pronounced some sort of ceremony over me, I'd still be a Sikh. Force cannot change the beliefs in one's heart or mind.
Mai totaly hit the nail on the head, i agree with her completly. I can understand someone who would like another person to revert/convert to thier religion i.e the purpose of misionaries in many religions but forcing someone, thats another matter all together which i strongly disagree with.
As a muslim i am offended with the phrase 'crazy muslims', however i do understand why someone would use this. I will clarify for those who dont know that islam does not allow forced conversions which confuses me even more why people will do this.

Wot really makes me furious is the fact that the islamic community start saying that she converted from her own free will and exaggerate the violence that happened in retaliation -How can they say that when if in the same situation i.e a muslim girl converting to sikhism - they would kill her. and if the muslims believe so much its about free will then why wont they allow any muslims to leave islam and join another religion? HELLO islamists need to be a little less fanatical our sikhs are only fighting the tyranny of forced conversions!!

Hiya. i know this girl and i used to go to school with her. she was a very religious sikh and also very bright in school. i think allah the almighty had cured her blindness, and showed her the real world. and the path to the light.
why are the sikh community over reacting, this just shows how weak their religion is.all religeons are on the decline while islam is expanding word wide and will forever do so.

As a born Canadian and proud Sikh, who happened to stumble upon this blog during some research for university....im quite appalled by some of the comments on this site. I have friends here and abroad of all races, religions and cultures. Here in Canada we integrate well and have true respect for each other, and each others religions. I have several Muslim friends (men and women) and have never come accross dialogue as stated on this site, or a "competition" to convert the opposite to their own religions. I have read about it in history books, where the modern person would say what were these people thinking. I have met many people from the UK, and a small majority do reflect the attitudes noted on this blog. Are UK people (Muslims/Sikhs) really that uneducated, racist, and/or ignorant. When the UK Sikhs immigrate to Canada, their attitudes about if Muslims are checked at the door..because that is not how we do business here. In conversation with several UK Sikh immigrants as well Muslim immigrants to Canada from the UK...they say the same..."The Sikhs and Muslims in England are backwards, live in the past and have no desire to go forward because they're lazy and it's just easier to hate". The immigrants,both Sikhs and Muslims, are very happy and proud to be in Canada, simply because they have been wanting to get away from the Muslim vs Sikh lifestyle in England for years. Here, we chill.

I agree, Canada is so much better in this sense than UK.. man the comments on this place are unbelievably juvenile! I mean what's your point in badmouthing anyone, are YOu doing anything yourself from stopping this from happening? No. You would only jump up and actually do something if it involved your own family or you. Let's face it, half the people who reply on here, just like to run their mouths off. If people from Islam want to have forced conversions then in the end their own faith will dwindle because these ppl who have been forced to accept Islam will not be able to back up their own opinions. All I can really say is, if you worry about losing your identity as whatever faith you are, then educate yourselves in it! I'm a Sikh girl born and raised in Canada, and I have never come across any Muslim boy trying to convert me. And let me add that I have grown up from that phase of picking and choosing friends who are of convenience. I befriend 'kind' and 'nice' individuals. I do not look at their foreheads and see the inscriptions of their faith written on then. All this seems to so common in UK, where it seems most of you are too keen on hating one another, rather than educating yourselves. Go to university, learn a thing or two, stop your damn hatred and move forward. It's sad to see that even in 2008, we have sad excuses of people who rant on about how their religion is the 'truth'. The truth is that only God knows who will be punished or rewarded, and to think otherwise and to make up your own bs stories is completely stupid.

It's true about this being a completely different story in the UK...I am a sikh girl living in Canada and I am not afraid of conversion or anything of that sort...my friends who are Muslim don't collaborate ...but maybe that is just because I haven't run into any of those janthas...lol
When I visited the UK in 2006 I was so shocked at the sheer numbers of muslims...not because I am full of hate or anything, just because I saw so many women in full burkas and MASKS...which to me was absolutely ridiculous...also the fact that these women were all shopping in the most expensive stores and wearing the most makeup and skimpy clothes underneath...I think they were arabic...anyways that was the first time I actually felt any sort of disgust towards somone's religion...just the hypocrisy that exists boggled my mind. It was like WOW LADIES...SHOULD I GET ME ONE OF THOSE...IS THERE SOME DANGER I AM NOT AWARE OF...I was dressed normally...nothing revealing...that is just the weirdest most unfathomable thing to me. AS a social worker in london i have seen alot of sikh girls leaving their homes as they have been sexually abused by their fathers who come home drunk and get into bed with them.
