Immigration and the census
A new immigration policy may result in a population explosion in the island of Jersey:
SENATOR Stuart Syvret claims that moves to scrap next year's census are a deliberate attempt to cover up a population explosion that will result from a new immigration policy.
The States were told today by Policy and Resources Committee president Senator Frank Walker that the next census will be held in 2011 instead of the planned date of 2006.
And he gave assurances that there would be accurate estimates of the size of the population collated on an annual basis by the States Statistics Unit.
But Senator Syvret said he and other politicians were 'appalled by this absolutely preposterous and outrageous move'. He said he would bring a proposition to the House to attempt to reverse the decision made by P & R under delegated powers.
'It is clearly an attempt to hide and disguise the real effects of the proposed P & R migration policy. It is ludicrous to assert that Jersey does not need a census. A census is the proven best methodology of collating population data,' he said.
