Iowa man charged with criminal transmission of HIV

It's happened again. There's a new case of a man accused of intentionally exposing others to HIV. This time, a father-in-law reported the man to police, making it the third case of intentional HIV exposure in three weeks.

Dewayne Boyd is behind bars charged with criminal transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Authorities believe between August 1st and August 10th, the 31-year-old had sexual intercourse three times with one woman. But that's not the whole story. Investigators learned about the case through Boyd's father-in-law, who says his daughter suffers from the virus too.

He's the man accused of intentionally exposing at least one woman to HIV. Michael Locascio says, "Take a good look at his picture, because this man is dangerous."

Michael Locascio is Dewayne Boyd's father-in-law. He says, "My daughter was diagnosed with HIV and it turned out that her present husband gave it to her. And he never notified her. He'd known about it since 1991 and they got married in November of last year."

Locascio says he found out that while his daughter was hospitalized in Iowa, suffering from the virus, Boyd was with another woman. And because 31-year-old Boyd is HIV positive Locascio told authorities right away. He says, "I went to the police department, notified them."

Wednesday night authorities talked with the 25-year-old woman, to see whether she was a victim. Spirit Lake Police Department Sergeant Brian Stahl says, "The officer that was investigating this particular one went and spoke with her yesterday evening. And from that she had some inclination but it was confirmed based on his medical condition, the officer confirmed that information to her."

Right now Boyd is only being charged with intentionally exposing the 25-year-old woman to HIV, not his wife. But authorities say there could be more charges. Stahl says, "I believe there is probably going to be a strong possibility that there may be other victims."

Spirit Lake officials say because Boyd's wife is currently in an Iowa City hospital, they haven't been able to talk to her and say they're still investigating that case. In addition to the HIV charge, Boyd was also arrested for possession of meth. He's in jail on a $34,000 cash bond.
