Suspects in Los Angeles drug bust part of Jamaican ring

Associated Press:

Eight men arrested in a $1 million marijuana bust belong to a Jamaican drug trafficking ring, police said.

The suspects were taken into custody Thursday as police seized about 1,200 pounds of marijuana, $145,000 in cash, and firearms in the city's gritty Rampart neighborhood, police Chief William Bratton said Friday.

Each was booked for investigation of various drug charges.

Seven of the suspects had previous felony convictions, Bratton said. They had re-entered the country illegally after being deported.

The drugs were allegedly transported across the Mexican border.

The sting took place at an apartment complex where detectives saw men loading duffel bags into cars.

Authorities pulled over two vehicles, found the bags filled with drugs and made several arrests, then raided the building.

Those arrested include Martin Torvor, 39; Ion Osbourne, 29; Sylvester Allen, 37; Carlos Brady, 40; Trevor Dalhouse, 52; Hugh Lywood, 44; Dennis Barnes, 47; and Larick Matheson, 55. All are Jamaican nationals, police said.
